Help! 3 weeks ago I went in for an AV fistula and came out with a graft. it's been 3 weeks and my arm feels like wood and is basically unusable. It is swollen, it hurts, and my fingers tingle like they are asleep. My docor says it's working fine. Is this normal?? I am no wushy but he says suck it up. please any one with this experience write to me. I was introduced to others who had recently had the procedure abd saw nothing like this. Judy msju@msn.com

Judy,
The swelling that you describe is very common with graft placement. When a graft is tunneled there is a lot of damage to the tissues which causes the swelling and this may extend all the way up to your shoulder but will usually subside in 4-6 weeks. The tingling in your fingers could be caused from the swelling or a condition known as "steel syndrome". Steel syndrome is caused from too much blood flow is being diverted to the graft/fistula and if severe, the access may need to be replaced. |
