Can anyone direct me to any standard or written protocol either supporting or refuting the use of HD vascular access catheters being used for IV access in between dialysis treatments? (Refering to in-hospital use)

Some hospitals have written their own protocol that usually states the catheter can only be accessed by the dialysis nurse. Many times the doctors will also put in their orders that the catheter can only be accessed by the dialysis nurse. In practice we (dialysis nurses) try to assist the nurses or lab in use of the catheter if there is no other access or the patient is being repeated punctured for attempts at IV's or labs. We use the same protocol as in the outpatient setting. We have also provided training for the ER/EMS staff on how to access catheters and grafts in emergency situations.
