We currently use Heparin at 5,000 units/ml to lock off our hemodialysis catheters after use and are considering a change to Heparin 1,000 units/ml.
Any comments on this would be gratefully received.

Previously we were instilling heparin 5000iu mixing with .3 to .4 ml of normal saline.
Now we use 1.4ml and 1.3 ml of heparin 5000 iu per ml.

However the half life of heparin is only 50 minutes.after that the '+ve pressure'
?plays an important role in peventing any clotformation.
