When we evaluated the machine that was one of our major concerns (service mode easily accessed by clinical staff). We were told by Fresenius that this has never been an issue, obviously we were misinformed.

Chuck, I totally agree. I have seen this problem with my H machines. I have on many occasions come in on the Sunday of day light savings time only to find my machines have already been reset. Although this is not a huge deal in and of it self, if the techs are comfortable enough to change times around, what else will they try and screw up? I think that this is one of the biggest weaknesses of the Fresenius machines. In true Fresenius fashion instead of fixing the problem in the upgrade from the H to the K, they only made it worse.
I know of a unit that had a direct feed water system that was turned off at night. One of the closers turned off the extended prerinse on the K machines, so he could get out earlier.

I have not really had this problem with the staff at one of my clinics. from the beginning i told them that they could really screw something up and hurt someone if they just started "looking around". Guest I would say that you should get with the clinic manager and come up with some kind of disciplinary action if someone is messing around in service mode. I have not done that just because i have not had to. but just a suggestion

A lock would also prevent the reduction of cycle times. I have found clinic standard times reduced. I assume that it was to "save time" with end of day work.
In the absence of a lock, a log file showing each action, time, and date would be handy. Baxter Meridians had that, so a technical person would be able to note when a bleach cycle had been stepped through instead of allowed to run.

On the K model? with the new easy service mode access during power up? its impossible, maybe re-do the software and delete the part that says during power up "Press Confirm To Enter Service Mode"
New K machines no longer have the Service Mode switch on the back of the card cage. You have to put them into service mode by selecting it during power up and initialization. There is no way other than that now to do it.

I think it is up to the Clinic Manager to tell their staff that anyone caught getting into the service mode will be fired on the spot. People can do enough damage in there that can kill someone and then it will look like the tech staff messed up. My staff knows that if they get in there, they will be working for the Golden Arches.

Accountability is a cool concept. Consequences for stupidity and carelessness. Rewards for the detail-oriented, hard-working individuals. Sadly, I'm afraid that these are concepts of the past.
Actually, the worst thing about a k machine is when a patient is on all nice and comfy and machine craps out. I mean no warning, no blood pump, an annoying alarm, that patient wondering what's going on, patients around him wondering what's going on, and a tech trying to figure out how to get the blood pump handle in. Nice power supply design. What other machine does that?

Fresenius 5008 has a back up battery, it will let the machine runing about 15 minutes without the AC power. I heard FDA does not approve the sale of the 5008 in the US yet.

Maybe the FDA wants them to fix the original problem first
