Just looking to see what king of cost saving initiaves anyone has either come up with and/or implemented in their unit. For example, using your RO reject for flushing toilets and drains. Installing energy efficient lighting or solar panels, etc. Another interesting topic, so I am looking forward to what kind of things are being done out in the field. Thanks.
One thing we are planning to do but have not started yet is, install motion sensor light switches in low use/traffic areas such as restrooms, water rooms, stock rooms, etc.. It's hard to believe how hard it is to get people to turn off lights when they are not needed.

Chuck,
We already have the motion sensor lights everywhere you mentioned except the restrooms. You might want to think twice about putting them there.

I had a facility that at one point we were looking at using the concentrate water for landscaping. It was a direct feed system (so the water usage was high) but was in the middle of no where, used a private well for supply water, and there were little building codes, restrictions, etc. In the end it wasn't done anyway because the "turkey mound" spetic system overflowed and new tanks had to be installed, that was one code enforcement they did have. It's never dull in dialysis.
If you are looking for cost saving initiatives don't jump in until you understand the cost structure. Look at your costs and detrrmine first where your major expenditures are. If you adopt this method you will realize the most significant savings up-front (low-hanging fruit.) This will give validity to your efforts and possibly some funding for additional cost-saving efforts. I say this because motion sensing light switches may save energy but is that where you want to head first? As Carl Bernstein was told during his Watergate reporting days - "Follow the money"!
