Our clinic has 45 treatment stations and we run at full capacity. We actually have 4 large carbon tanks in series. We only need three to meet EBCT. All can be bypassed individually.
We did it this way so a tank could be taken off line and rebedded while the system is in operation(saves overtime hours).
Another clinic(15 stations) we have has carbon tanks in a parallel configuration(2 banks of 2). These tanks have no bypass as this would allow raw chlorinated water through to the RO and then the loop. In this case we just turn off the inlet and outlet valves to one bank of tanks and replace the tanks while the other bank continues to provide Cl frre water.

North,

New Interpretive guidelines, V195: "...each adsorption bed shall have an EBCT of at least 5 minutes at the maximum product flow rate (a total EBCT of at least 10 minutes". My understanding is that tanks in parallel are considered to be a "bed", each tank in a series configuaration is also a "bed". If you need three of your four "in series" tanks to get 10 minutes, then one or more of them is less than 5 minutes and therefore not in compliance.

Please do not make assumptions and then accuse me of not meeting standards. I can assure you we meet EBCT for each tank. The key phrase in the guidelines is "at least". I was just giving an example of how that by exceeding the minimum EBCT it makes it easier to do maintenance during operating hours.

North,

Either you mis-stated your post or, Mark is correct. The guidelines state...

...each adsorption bed shall have an EBCT of at least 5 minutes at the maximum product flow rate (a total EBCT of at least 10 minutes".

In your post you said... "We only need three to meet EBCT." If you need 3 tanks to meet the EBCT then each tank is giving you less than the required 5 minutes.

While you may be meeting the TOTAL EBCT, you are not meeting it for the individual tanks.

Chuck

North,

No accusation or offense was intended, it was an observation that your numbers, in a sense, did not add up. V192 is one of the few changes that are clear and easy to read. I consider this forum as kind of an on-going internal audit and I have actually made changes to my policies and procedures based on what I read here. Better we should find something than a state surveyor.

One other thought occurred to me regarding the carbon tank configuration NOrth describes at his 45 station unit. If every individual carbon tank can be bypassed, does that mean all of the carbon tanks could be bypassed, inadvertently? Aren't the carbon tanks supposed to be plumbed to make this impossible?

Mt Goat,

Agreed, the AmeriWater labels that came with the last system I bought from them 5 months ago "looked" great. Unless they have changed since then, they do not meet the criteria of the new regulations.

The new AmeriWater labels (just released within the past two months) are designed specifically for the new requirements. Previous labels were not designed for this purpose.

Can you have signs made up and posted on the wall behind each piece of equipment or do they have to be plastered on the equipment

IMHO they should be on the equipmentbut in actuallity it probably dosn't really matter, it's all going to depend on the surveyors individual interpretation.

AAMI RD52 states...

"If water system manufacturers have not done so, users should label major water system components in a manner that not only identifies a device but also describes its function, how performance is verified, and what actions to take in the event performance is not within an acceptable range."

How are they hooked up? What's your Empty bed contact time? Worker and Polisher are to be of equal size with a 10+ minute EBCT spread over the two stages. Could be Worker, Polisher, and Spare maybe.
