Hi all,
We have 2 Millenium portable RO's from Osmonics that have had high cultures since the day we got them. At first, we thought that it might be due to the fact that we were just starting the inpatient program and were not using them each day. Now we rinse each day for a min. of 30 minutes. Currently I sample weekly and have to do a clean and disinfect every 2 weeks for CFU >50. I leave the Renalin in the RO for between 4 and 12 hours (per Osmonics)Osmonics has replaced the membranes once for us, and we have tried various other solutions with no success. Anyone out there got any ideas for me? I don't have time to do clean/sanitize on a weekly basis!!

You can store the RO in Biosan wich you can purchase from Osmonics. Or, you can store the RO in Progard wich you can get from Medro Systems (972) 542-8200. I have several Acute locations that may only do a treatment once a month. I use the Progard and it seems to work quite well. You can only leave it in the RO for 30 days. This normally does not pose a problem because you will have to rinse the RO before you pull your cultures then reintroduce the Progard when you are done. The Progard also has some slight cleaning properties for biological matter. I hope this information helps.

Exactly the same problem experiencing for 3 years with the Millenium.Actually portable
F-801 from Osmonics not much better.I think
all portable ROs are the same-depends on usage frequency:24-40 hrs not used-stagnation.Before Renalin do Biosan for 2-3 hrs-removes biofilm(monthly). If not in use run them daily 2-4 times for 20-30 min.Usualy colony count is <50,every 2-3 month->50.

had similar problum with portables both milinums and series 700 found probleum to be in the feed water to the ros themselves we had carbon tanks on where the water was unchlorinated so the carbons were a big bug trap

I had a similar experience at out acute program with the F-801's. Turned out the carbon tanks were the source of the bacteria which was breaking through the RO membrane. I believe carbon will act as an organic filter and pre-filtering has eliminated the bacteria issue for us. We installed a wall mounted pre carbon 20" filter housing using a 5 micron filter immediately followed by a machine mounted 10" filter housing using a 1 micron filter. The 20" filter is changed weekly and the machine mounted filters are replaced every other week. This resolved out culture problems. Hope this helps.

We run our acute program with Millenium portables exclusivally, that is to say, no "fixed skids". Currently our practice is to sterlize weekly with Minncare high concentration for at least 30 minutes and rinse to clear.
I have 41 Milleniums in my inventory, and although we have had some growth, it stays well below the 50 CFU action level.

The Micron filters are changed at least monthly, in higher use facilities, weekly.
The carbon tanks are indeed a source of growth, but if your membranes are in good condition, and your staff backflushes pre/post tx, your should be able to keep the growth well within standards.

I send some cultures to independant labs, some are via Miilipore Paddles. We also do LAL's, so we know that our system is working.

FYI: I'm also in Wash., Seattle area.
