In my post on May 14th I was referring to the post dialyzer filter (the little round 2 piece housing with the o-ring and screen filter inside).

Not trying to be stupid or rude. When disassebling the housing for inspection, make sure you are only pressing on the wings, and NOT flexing the tubing or nipples at all. Also, a little valve lube on the ring (carefully worked in and excess removed) will allow the housing to slide open and shut with less stress to the plastic.
I had similar issues until a veteran told me the above - now breaks are rare.
For whatever reason, when those filter housings are brand new the first time that you try to open them they do not want to come apart. And the best way that I have found is to take a small straight blade screwdriver and put it into the area between the lock tabs and twist it to force it a little. As mentioned, it is very easy to break the hose barbs off if you put force on them. Once the housing has been taken apart one or two times it becomes easier.
