So it's better to go with the flow instead of trying to understand why or even changing something that is outdated or just plain wrong?

Furthermore, letting the salt level go low will actually allow you to detect/protect against bridging.

I know of a surveyor that used to work for Davita and many of her comments and "observations" are based on the Davita way of things. If left unchallenged we would all be drinking koolaid!

I suppose that if the water level is less than 1 inch above the salt, the water above the salt may approach saturation. The higher the water is above the salt, the less salt you will have in the water above the salt. As the brine tank fills with water and the water passes through the salt, the water will pick up some salt but it will not have enough time to become saturated. It needs to sit in the Brine Tank for at least 4 hours for the water that is in contact with the salt to come up to saturation. Since the saturated solution is heavier than the water, it stays next to the salt preventing the water above the salt from contacting the salt. You will have some salt in the water that is above the salt and it will taste salty, but it wont be saturated. If the salt is not saturated by the time of the next regeneration, you wont get the right concentration of salt through the softener. Therefore, your capacity will be lower potentially risking a hardness breakthrough.

I tested this out. I let water sit in a brine tank for several days. The water that was in contact with the salt became saturated in a few hours. The water above the salt was less than 50% saturated after several days. If you want to test this out yourself, they make hydrometers with a 0-100% NaCl satuation scale or you can use a hydrometer with a specific gravity scale if you know the specific gravity of salt at 100% saturation.

I haven't had koolaid in years. Maybe I will have some for old times sake. Every once in a while, everyone should have a koolaid mustache....Got Koolaid! (made with RO water of course)
