I was talking to a person in the biomed dept of a hospital very nearby. There was an opening in the dept and he said pay was 16 something/hour. They had the job opened for awhile but had to find someone out of state to fill the position. Seems to me there are not as many biomeds in general as there used to be. The pay seems comparable to a dialysis equip tech but maybe more. Is that the same where you are?

I believe the Biomed at the hospital next to me makes around $42,000 or about $20.00 hr. He is the only Biomed in the hospital in a town around 14,000. That is only a few cents more than I make and he has a lot more responsability.

In the hospital I work for, the biomed dept takes care of dialysis as well as all other medical equipment.
We are an 800 bed facility with 20 biomed techs(7 of which do dialysis full time). The biomed dept also has a full time machinest, biomedical engineer and medical gas line maintenance person. Dialysis techs and biomed techs make the same amount of money($25.00 to $34.00/hour).

North,

How many machines do you have? It sounds like your unit is either HUGE or you have 7 very bored biomeds.

We have one 45 station unit, two 10 station units, 12 satelite units(average 5 stations) and 8 home patients all spread over an area of about 1000 square kilometers . Also I should note I am in eastern Canada but you probably guessed that with my use of kilometers instead of miles.ha ha. I can assure you the techs are very busy. We have 156 Gambro Phoenix machines and 25 Baxter Arena dialysis machines plus all the water systems as well. We have Gambro and Marcor water systems.
The pay I noted is the range and is actually a little less than what techs in central and western Canada make. Chief dialysis techs in Alberta make about $39.00/hr. I kid you not.
I believe eduacational requirements in Canada are much different than in the US.
Do eduacational requirements differ from state to state?

North, that explains it. I never thought of hospital biomeds going to outpatient facilities.

Speaking of huge clinics.....

I seem to remember hearing about a very large clinic in either PA or NY that had something like 50+ stations and operated 24 hrs/day.

Does anyone know anything about this or are my pain meds kicking in?

Chuck

Don't know about PA or NY but I know of a unit in Toronto that I believe has 85 stations on two different floors plus over 80 home patients.
I also heard of a clinic in Japan that has over 100 stations. It boggles the mind. Staff must wear roller blades.

Out here in california, bio-meds inhouse make between 30-40/hr. Depends on deg./exp. As equipment tech. goes(out pt.dialysis/26st or more) you can start around 27/hr and up.
