I was offered to do some work on the side for a dialysis unit. they want me to maintain dialysis machines and there water system. Does anyone out there has experience in what to do and what not to do. I am looking for answers regarding contract, quote (per machine or per hour), should I hire an attorney, do I need to buy a special insurance (liability) to cover me? Please advice.

depending on what company you work for, state etc. you can probably do side jobs. The important thing is for it not to be conflict is use your own tools (don't bring employers test equipment to competitor and expect them to tolerate that). In order to avoid need for liability insurance and such ask them to set you up as a per diem or prn employee. That way you work as needed and as available but legally are an employee of their company.

SS can you please tell me why could be a problem doing side jobs? I'm taking care of two different dialysis clinis. My full time clinic doesn't know I'm working in the other part time clinic. The part time clinic knows. Can you tell me your point of view. Thanks.

I would ask my supervisor of the company I work full time at about that. If they trained you and you are using that training to assist their competition they may not like it to well. If the other clinic is a distance away and is no real threat as far as competition they may not mind.

your right sr biomed the problem that I'm having with my full time job is that they are not paying me as good as the part time. the part time is paying me time an a half of what I make in my full time. Besides I have request 3 times a raise, but they do not wanna give it to me.

i do a lot of work on the side. Medical and bioresearch equipment. I do not have insurance. They do and i make it known on my work orders that they are liable not me. I also asked for raises and got the same answer as you. I went to another company, got a huge pay increase and still do work on the side. It takes time but when you move to another job they pay for your experiance and then the company you worked for pays higher for a person to replace you. It doesn't make sense but thjat's the way it is.

You can put whatever you want on your work order but if something goes wrong you'll be going down with the ship. If you're contracting for the other company you best have a $1,000,000 or better insurance policy. I sure wouldn't want to be in the middle of a law suit (especially with a medical company) because a company wants to save a little money by paying you instead of hiring someone. Good luck with that!

Have in your contract that you are covered by thier insurance and have them sign the contract or see how much insurance costs and cover youself. The hardest step is the first step.
