I would check with your state health board. In CT they have set parameters for an acceptable temperature range in health care settings. Unfortunately, you never seem to be able to please the patients and the staff at the same time.
We keep our thermostats set to 72 degrees and our thermostats have 2 different lock settings. It is important that staff cannot turn off the fan, as this will cause problems with the HVAC system. Most dialysis patients feel cold for several reasons: 1) they have a pint of blood outside their body getting cooled off and returned to them; 2)metabolic changes cause reduced mitochondrial functioning resulting in less body heat being produced; 3)blood thinners like heparin and esp. coumadin result in cooler body temps. Even if the temp is well adjusted, sometimes just the movement of the air, whether AC or Heat, makes patients feel cold. Conversely, staff are wearing ppe that traps in their body heat and they're moving around all day, so they tend to feel hot. It's a case of you can't please everyone all the time. I wouldn't let the temp go below 70 degrees no matter what, and have the patients bring in blankets, hats, gloves, etc. A lock on the thermostat is also important. |

We keep the temperature around 74. It is an on going battle. The staff is hot, and the patients are cold.
I believe the new conditions of coverage address patient comfort. |
