Read the bicarb bag. Should say to dispose no later than 24hrs. We keep ours overnight though.

Did it for years with no problems. As long as you are STRICTLY following the 24 hr rule, there should be no issues.

If you are FMC you should be dumping it everyday.

I work at a FMC unit up north, and we used to dump our bicarb everynight. A couple months back we did a bicarb validation, validating that it was good for 24 hours. We took cultures and bicarb readings off a machine running on a jug, and did another test 24 hours later with the same jug. We also did cultures on the water used to make the bicarb initally. We now save what ever bicarb is left for the next day.

Like they said earlier, you can store and use bicarb within 24 hrs. You can not however store it in the mixer. The mixer needs to be rinsed at the end of each day. Our staff mix as late in the day as possible for the next day then put into jugs. We did validate the 24 hr storage as well.

Guys what I'm trying to do is mixing bicarb at the end of the day after rinsing the bicarb loop with R.O water, then leave that bicarb that I mixed overnight for example at 8 PM, then at 6 AM the next morning when I get to the unit do the rest of the bicarb that I need for the rest of the day. I just concern about bacteria proliferation. Any feed back. Thanks.

new reg's state "storage times for bicarbonate concentrate should be minimized" I think it's going to depend on what state you are in and also how are the patients serum bicarb levels (if they are low you may have a probelm). As far as bacteria you're not helping your cause by recircing that long.

old par, if you are FMC, the policy is very well laid out in the technical policy manual. You do the testing required and the medical director signs off the validation and gives approval to store overnight. It does not say that you can't store in the mixer, as long as the mixer and bic loop are rinsed and disinfected per policy. Keep the form with the med. director's signature on file forever and strictly follow the 24 hr rule and you'll be fine. If you are with another company, I don't know what the rules are. Sorry.

If you follow FMC policy, you cannot store whatever is left at the end of the day. You must dump what is left and rinse your system. You can then re-mix to store overnight.
